The Heart of the King is a delightful fantasy novel by Christian author J. J. Fischer, who’s written some of my favorite fantasy novels. (Check out my book reviews on Calor, Caligo, and Regency and Regicide!)
This book was especially intriguing to me after reading several of Fischer’s other books. THOTK was definitely a lighter read than The Nightingale Trilogy, but it’s more serious than Regency and Regicide. And honestly . . . I think it’s my favorite so far.
Fischer always does a fantastic job of blending serious themes with engaging plots and lighthearted moments, so I came into this book with high expectations, which were absolutely exceeded. While Fischer weaves in deeper themes (especially of vocation, courage, honor, and fate vs. free will), THOTK never felt didactic or preachy. Rather, those musings arise naturally from the story and the struggles of the characters.
And speaking of characters, both main characters were extremely well done. Fischer did a great job of handling a “star-crossed lovers” trope (the female main character is prophesied to capture the heart of the king . . . who is not the male main character) without it feeling stereotypical. (This is one of my least favorite tropes, and I absolutely loved the romance!)
Both characters are also well-developed as decent people who still have serious flaws—not saints or scoundrels, but very real human beings with hopes and fears and virtues and sins. The development of each character in parallel to the budding romance was so satisfying to watch!
I would wholeheartedly recommend The Heart of the King to anyone who enjoys intricate fantasy worlds, quest stories, and romance. There are a few frightening moments, but nothing graphic or gory. The romance is sweet and slow-moving, and doesn’t go beyond kissing. (One character is illegitimate, but the story doesn’t go into details.) Anyone over 13 would be able to handle the action/adventure side of things, and I could see many younger readers enjoying it. But the depth of the story and characters is enough to make this a delightful read for all ages!
