Innovative Places to Write

Right now I’m in the midst of a lot of travel (first to Minnesota and then to Phoenix, so it’s all over the place!). Anyway, I thought I’d share some of the most exotic places I’ve written (and the looks I’ve gotten while doing so!).

• On a California beach (see photo above). Yes, I know most people would find the beach more interesting than writing. But in my defense, it was cold!• In a hotel room on a road trip. While eating a popsicle. It’s hard to write an email newsletter with delicious popsicle juice threatening to drip down your wrist!
• In a college English class. (Yes, during class. Shhh. . . .)
• In the Denver airport. I could see maybe (maybe) one person reading a paper book; everyone else was on screens. Believe me, I got some weird looks scribbling away with a pencil and notebook. . . .
• On a plane that was sitting on the ground. For three hours. I mean, at least I was productive? But still . . . that was a long three hours.
• At five am at the kitchen table of friends my family was staying with. (No, I did not wake them up.)
• In the back of a church sanctuary. (Not during church. But sanctuaries are peaceful places, and as a Christian writer, contemplation leads to creativity very quickly.)
• At summer camp. During lunch. On the back of a napkin. It worked. (And I think I still have the napkin.)

And I’m sure I’ll only add to the list in the weeks to come! Writing can be hard to fit into the chaos of everyday life, but with a little creativity (and a notebook!), you can definitely make it happen. (I wrote the bulk of the first draft of The Star and the Sword in five to ten minute chunks between college classes. Not ideal, but it worked.)

Where is the strangest place you’ve written, or your favorite from this list? Let me know in the comments below!
