Genre: Christian fantasy

Overall rating: 5/5

Literary Value: 5/5 I absolutely loved Fischer’s writing in this book! I fell in love with her Nightingale Trilogy (I’ve also reviewed Calor and Caligo) months ago, partly because of the beautiful writing, but Regency and Regicide outshone even that! While the more serious nature of The Nightingale Trilogy lent itself well to poetic and reflective passages, Regency and Regicide is more lighthearted, allowing for both witty wordplay and beautiful passages.

Worldview: 5/5 Christian faith is less explicitly addressed in Regency and Regicide than in some of Fischer’s other books, but the main characters are both Christian. But what made me absolutely love this book is the exploration of love—idealistic, realistic, romantic, sacrificial, and so many other aspects. Without even a touch of cynicism, this book affirms the beauty of real-life romance, even when it’s not as idealistic as fictional romance.

Enjoyability: 5/5 I read Regency and Regicide in a single evening, and it absolutely made my day (week, probably). Even after a tiring day, I was laughing by the second page, and loved every moment that followed!

Caveats: Paganism/witchcraft exist in the fictional world, but it’s not glorified in any way. Some action, but very little violence. Tastefully described kissing. Regency and Regicide is intended for an adult audience, but it’s completely appropriate for younger readers as well.

Other books by the author: J. J. Fischer has written several other books, which you can check out on her website!
