Literary Value: 4/5 You’ve probably figured out by now that I’m pretty picky about writing style, especially in fantasy! This book is well-written, I just have a soft spot for beautiful/poetic passages, and this book didn’t really contain any (in part because of the first person narration). But again, that’s mostly me!

Worldview: 4/5 I didn’t disagree with any part of the book’s worldview, I just expected it to be more explicitly Christian. (Perhaps some of that is coming later in the series?) I enjoy books with under-the-surface Christian values as well, that’s just not what I was expecting coming into this book. But I know a lot of readers prefer more subtle Christian themes—and if that’s the case, this would be the perfect book for you!

Enjoyability: 4/5 I had a hard time getting into this book. Looking back, I think I just didn’t relate to the main character at the beginning. I definitely connected better with her later on, so maybe that was just because of more character development. That being said, the plot was intriguing enough to keep me reading, and I absolutely loved all the characters by the end—I will definitely be reading the sequel when it comes out!

Caveats: None that I can recall. Typical fantasy action, but no excessive violence.
